Surgery theory
Builds on Smooth manifoldn-sphereCobordism
Definition
Let be a smooth manifold of dimension , and let be integers with . Let be a smooth embedding, where is the -sphere and the closed -disc. The surgery on along is the following manifold: Here the two pieces are glued along their common boundary by , and corners are smoothed. The number is the index of the surgery. Surgery theory is the study of manifolds through such operations. Its central problem is to turn a degree one normal map into a homotopy equivalence by a sequence of surgeries.
Remarks
The trace of the surgery is , a -handle attached to . It is a cobordism from to , and every compact cobordism is obtained by a finite sequence of such traces. Example: let and an embedding of as an annulus around the meridian circle. Removing the open annulus leaves a cylinder , and gluing in two discs caps it to . So surgery of index on a torus along a meridian gives the sphere. Non-example: let be the core circle of a Möbius band inside . Every tubular neighbourhood of is a Möbius band and not an annulus, so has no neighbourhood of the form . So there is no embedding as in the definition with core , and no surgery along is defined.
