Definition

A combinatorial class is a set π’œ\mathcal{A} with a size function βˆ£β‹…βˆ£β€‰β£:π’œβ†’β„•\abs{\cdot} \colon \mathcal{A} \to \N such that each set π’œn={aβˆˆπ’œ:∣a∣=n}\mathcal{A}_n = \set{a \in \mathcal{A} : \abs{a} = n} is finite. Its ordinary generating function is A(z)=βˆ‘nβ‰₯0βˆ£π’œn∣znA(z) = \sum_{n \ge 0} \abs{\mathcal{A}_n} z^n. A construction Ξ¦\Phi builds a class from given classes ℬ,π’ž,…\mathcal{B}, \mathcal{C}, \ldots. It is admissible if the counts of Ξ¦(ℬ,π’ž,…)\Phi(\mathcal{B}, \mathcal{C}, \ldots) depend only on the counts of ℬ,π’ž,…\mathcal{B}, \mathcal{C}, \ldots. Let β„°\mathcal{E} be the neutral class, with one object of size 00, and 𝒡\mathcal{Z} the atomic class, with one object of size 11. The symbolic method has two steps:

  1. describe the class by an equation built from β„°\mathcal{E}, 𝒡\mathcal{Z} and admissible constructions;
  2. replace each construction by its rule on generating functions, which gives an equation for A(z)A(z).

Remarks

For unlabelled classes the basic rules are as follows. The disjoint union ℬ+π’ž\mathcal{B} + \mathcal{C} gives B(z)+C(z)B(z) + C(z). The Cartesian product β„¬Γ—π’ž\mathcal{B} \times \mathcal{C}, with sizes added, gives B(z)C(z)B(z) C(z). The sequence construction SEQ⁑(ℬ)\operatorname{SEQ}(\mathcal{B}), for ℬ0=βˆ…\mathcal{B}_0 = \emptyset, gives 1/(1βˆ’B(z))1 / (1 - B(z)). The multiset construction MSET⁑(ℬ)\operatorname{MSET}(\mathcal{B}), for ℬ0=βˆ…\mathcal{B}_0 = \emptyset, gives exp⁑(βˆ‘kβ‰₯1B(zk)/k)\exp\big(\sum_{k \ge 1} B(z^k) / k\big). For labelled classes one uses exponential generating functions. Then the labelled product gives B(z)C(z)B(z) C(z), and, for ℬ0=βˆ…\mathcal{B}_0 = \emptyset, sets give exp⁑(B(z))\exp(B(z)) and cycles give log⁑11βˆ’B(z)\log \frac{1}{1 - B(z)}.

Example: binary trees satisfy ℬ=β„°+𝒡×ℬ×ℬ\mathcal{B} = \mathcal{E} + \mathcal{Z} \times \mathcal{B} \times \mathcal{B}, with size the number of internal nodes. The rules give B(z)=1+zB(z)2B(z) = 1 + z B(z)^2. Example: permutations are labelled sets of cycles, so their exponential generating function is exp⁑(log⁑11βˆ’z)=11βˆ’z\exp\big(\log \frac{1}{1 - z}\big) = \frac{1}{1 - z}, which gives n!n!.

Non-example: the operation "keep the objects of ℬ\mathcal{B} that are trees of height at most 22" is not admissible. Its counts depend on the inner structure of the objects of ℬ\mathcal{B}, and not only on the numbers βˆ£β„¬n∣\abs{\mathcal{B}_n}.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
