Definition

Let VV be a finite-dimensional real inner product space with inner product ⟨⋅,⋅⟩\ip{\cdot}{\cdot}. Let Ω⊆V\Omega \subseteq V be a nonempty open convex cone, and let Ωˉ\bar{\Omega} be its closure. The open dual cone of Ω\Omega is Ω∗={y∈V:⟨x,y⟩>0 for all x∈Ωˉ∖{0}}.\Omega^* = \set{y \in V : \ip{x}{y} > 0 \text{ for all } x \in \bar{\Omega} \setminus \set{0}}. Let G(Ω)={g∈GL(V):g(Ω)=Ω}G(\Omega) = \set{g \in GL(V) : g(\Omega) = \Omega} be the automorphism group of Ω\Omega. The cone Ω\Omega is symmetric if:

  1. Ω\Omega is self-dual: Ω∗=Ω\Omega^* = \Omega, a condition built on the dual cone.
  2. Ω\Omega is homogeneous: for all x,y∈Ωx, y \in \Omega there is g∈G(Ω)g \in G(\Omega) with g(x)=yg(x) = y.

Remarks

Example: the positive orthant Ω=(0,∞)n\Omega = (0, \infty)^n in ℝn\R^n with the dot product. A vector yy satisfies ⟨x,y⟩>0\ip{x}{y} > 0 for every nonzero xx with nonnegative entries exactly when every entry of yy is positive, so Ω∗=Ω\Omega^* = \Omega. The diagonal matrix with entries yi/xi>0y_i / x_i > 0 maps x∈Ωx \in \Omega to y∈Ωy \in \Omega and preserves Ω\Omega, so Ω\Omega is homogeneous.

Non-example: the sector Ω={(s,t)∈ℝ2:∣t∣<2s}\Omega = \set{(s, t) \in \R^2 : \abs{t} < 2s} with the dot product. It is homogeneous, since a linear map that scales its two boundary rays by independent positive factors preserves it and moves any interior point to any other. It is not self-dual: its opening angle is 2arctan⁡2>π/22 \arctan 2 > \pi/2, while its dual cone has the opening angle π−2arctan⁡2<π/2\pi - 2\arctan 2 < \pi/2.

Other standard examples are the Lorentz cone {(t,x)∈ℝ×ℝn:t>∥x∥}\set{(t, x) \in \R \times \R^{n} : t > \norm{x}} and the cone of positive definite real symmetric n×nn \times n matrices with the inner product ⟨A,B⟩=tr⁡(AB)\ip{A}{B} = \tr(AB).
