Definition

Let x1,x2,…x_1, x_2, \ldots be countably many commuting variables, and consider formal power series in them with integer coefficients. A symmetric function is such a series ff with these properties:

  1. ff has bounded degree: for some integer dd, every monomial of ff has total degree at most dd;
  2. ff is invariant under every permutation of the variables. Thus xi1a1⋯xirarx_{i_1}^{a_1} \cdots x_{i_r}^{a_r} and xj1a1⋯xjrarx_{j_1}^{a_1} \cdots x_{j_r}^{a_r} have equal coefficients when the isi_s are distinct and the jsj_s are distinct.

The symmetric functions form a ring, written Λ\Lambda.

Remarks

The ring Λ\Lambda is graded, Λ=⨁k≥0Λk\Lambda = \bigoplus_{k \ge 0} \Lambda^k, where Λk\Lambda^k consists of the homogeneous symmetric functions of degree kk. For a partition λ=(λ1,…,λr)\lambda = (\lambda_1, \ldots, \lambda_r), the monomial symmetric function mλm_\lambda is the sum of all distinct monomials xi1λ1⋯xirλrx_{i_1}^{\lambda_1} \cdots x_{i_r}^{\lambda_r} with distinct indices. The mλm_\lambda with λ\lambda a partition of kk form a ℤ\Z-basis of Λk\Lambda^k. Setting xn+1=xn+2=⋯=0x_{n+1} = x_{n+2} = \cdots = 0 maps Λ\Lambda onto the ring of symmetric polynomials in x1,…,xnx_1, \ldots, x_n. Equivalently, Λk\Lambda^k is the inverse limit of the degree-kk symmetric polynomials in nn variables, as n→∞n \to \infty.

Example: the power sum p2=x12+x22+x32+⋯p_2 = x_1^2 + x_2^2 + x_3^2 + \cdots is a symmetric function of degree 22. Both clauses hold: all monomials have degree 22, and a permutation of the variables only permutes the terms.

Non-example: the product ∏i≥1(1+xi)=1+e1+e2+⋯\prod_{i \ge 1} (1 + x_i) = 1 + e_1 + e_2 + \cdots is invariant under all permutations of the variables, but it fails clause 1. It contains the monomial x1x2⋯xkx_1 x_2 \cdots x_k of degree kk for every kk.

The elementary symmetric functions ek=∑i1<⋯<ikxi1⋯xike_k = \sum_{i_1 < \cdots < i_k} x_{i_1} \cdots x_{i_k} are algebraically independent, and Λ=ℤ[e1,e2,…]\Lambda = \Z[e_1, e_2, \ldots]. The same holds for the complete homogeneous symmetric functions hkh_k, the sum of all monomials of degree kk.
