Definition
Let be a connected Riemannian manifold. The manifold is a (Riemannian globally) symmetric space if each point has an isometry with two properties. The map satisfies , and its differential equals . The map is the geodesic symmetry at .
Remarks
Example: the unit sphere with the induced metric. For put . It is the restriction of a linear orthogonal map, so it is an isometry of ; it fixes ; and on it acts as .
Non-example: a closed surface of genus with a metric of constant curvature . Its isometry group is finite, so it does not act transitively on the surface. A symmetric space is homogeneous, since , for the midpoint of a shortest geodesic from to , swaps and ; so the surface is not symmetric. It is locally symmetric: its curvature tensor is parallel.
A symmetric space is complete, and is unique: it maps to . Let be the identity component of the isometry group and the stabilizer of a point; then . Conjugation by gives an involution of , and its fixed point group satisfies .
