Symplectic capacity
Builds on Symplectic manifold
Definition
Fix . Let be the open unit ball and the open unit cylinder, both with the standard symplectic form . A symplectic capacity on symplectic manifolds of dimension is a function assigning to each such manifold a value such that:
- (Monotonicity) If there is a symplectic embedding , then .
- (Conformality) for every real .
- (Normalization) .
Remarks
Example: the Gromov width . Monotonicity holds because an embedding into composed with is an embedding into . Conformality holds because scaling by (and swapping and if ) maps to symplectically. The value on the ball is clear, and the value on the cylinder is exactly Gromov's non-squeezing theorem.
Non-example: for , the function , suitably rescaled, satisfies monotonicity and conformality, but fails normalization, because the cylinder has infinite volume.
Some authors drop the normalization and only ask for nontriviality, and . Other examples are the Hofer–Zehnder capacity and the Ekeland–Hofer capacities. The Gromov width is the smallest normalized capacity.
