Definition
Let be a field and let be a finite-dimensional vector space over . A symplectic form on is a bilinear form such that:
- is alternating: for all .
- is nondegenerate: if for all , then .
A symplectic vector space is a pair of such a space and a symplectic form on .
Remarks
Example: on with coordinates , the standard form is . It is alternating, since each term vanishes when . It is nondegenerate: if has , then , and if has , then . Here and are the standard basis vectors for the coordinates and . Non-example: the form on with coordinates is alternating but degenerate, because pairs to zero with every vector. Every symplectic vector space has even dimension and a basis with and . In such a basis, the matrix of is . In characteristic other than , alternating is the same as skew-symmetric: .
