Definition

Let Σ\Sigma be an alphabet and let L⊆Σ∗L \subseteq \Sigma^* be a formal language. The syntactic congruence of LL is the relation ≡L\equiv_L on the free monoid Σ∗\Sigma^* defined as follows. One has u≡Lvu \equiv_L v when, for all x,y∈Σ∗x, y \in \Sigma^*, xuy∈Lxuy \in L if and only if xvy∈Lxvy \in L. It is a congruence of the monoid Σ∗\Sigma^*. The syntactic monoid of LL is the quotient monoid M(L)=Σ∗/≡LM(L) = \Sigma^* / {\equiv_L}, with product [u][v]=[uv][u][v] = [uv] and identity [ε][\varepsilon]. The map ηL ⁣:Σ∗→M(L)\eta_L \colon \Sigma^* \to M(L), u↦[u]u \mapsto [u], is the syntactic morphism.

Remarks

Example: for Σ={a}\Sigma = \set{a} and L={a2n:n≥0}L = \set{a^{2n} : n \ge 0}, one has ai≡Laja^i \equiv_L a^j exactly when i≡j(mod2)i \equiv j \pmod 2, so M(L)≅ℤ/2ℤM(L) \cong \Z/2\Z. Non-example: the one-sided relation u∼vu \sim v, given by "uz∈Luz \in L if and only if vz∈Lvz \in L for all zz", is in general not a congruence. For L={ab}L = \set{ab}, one has b∼bbb \sim bb, since no continuation puts either word in LL, but ab≁abbab \not\sim abb, since ab∈Lab \in L and abb∉Labb \notin L. So multiplying on the left by aa does not preserve ∼\sim, and the classes of ∼\sim do not form a quotient monoid. A monoid MM recognizes LL when L=φ−1(P)L = \varphi^{-1}(P) for some monoid morphism φ ⁣:Σ∗→M\varphi \colon \Sigma^* \to M and some P⊆MP \subseteq M. The syntactic monoid recognizes LL and divides every monoid that recognizes LL. The language LL is regular if and only if M(L)M(L) is finite, and then M(L)M(L) is isomorphic to the transition monoid of the minimal DFA of LL.

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
