Definition

Let (R,𝔪)(R, \mathfrak m) be a Noetherian local ring of Krull dimension dd. Elements x1,…,xdx_1, \dots, x_d of 𝔪\mathfrak m form a system of parameters of RR if the ideal (x1,…,xd)(x_1, \dots, x_d) is 𝔪\mathfrak m-primary.

Remarks

The ideal (x1,…,xd)(x_1, \dots, x_d) is 𝔪\mathfrak m-primary if and only if 𝔪n⊆(x1,…,xd)\mathfrak m^n \subseteq (x_1, \dots, x_d) for some n≥1n \ge 1, and if and only if R/(x1,…,xd)R/(x_1, \dots, x_d) has finite length. Example: in R=k[x,y](x,y)R = k[x, y]_{(x, y)}, with kk a field, the elements x2,y3x^2, y^3 form a system of parameters, because dim⁡R=2\dim R = 2 and 𝔪4⊆(x2,y3)\mathfrak m^4 \subseteq (x^2, y^3): each monomial xaybx^a y^b with a+b=4a + b = 4 has a≥2a \ge 2 or b≥3b \ge 3. Non-example: in the same ring, x,x+x2x, x + x^2 is not a system of parameters, because it generates the ideal (x)(x), and no power of yy lies in (x)(x). If x1,…,xdx_1, \dots, x_d generate 𝔪\mathfrak m itself, then RR is a regular local ring and the list is called a regular system of parameters.
