Definition
Let be a triangulated category with shift . A t-structure on is a pair of full subcategories, each closed under isomorphisms. Write and . The pair must satisfy:
- and ;
- for every in and every in ;
- every object fits into a distinguished triangle with in and in .
The heart of the t-structure is the full subcategory .
Remarks
The heart is always an abelian category, and the triangle in clause 3 is unique up to a unique isomorphism; this gives truncation functors and . Example: let be the derived category of an abelian category, written with cochain complexes. Its standard t-structure has the complexes with for and those with for . The triangle of clause 3 is , built from the truncated complexes, and the heart is equivalent to . Non-example: if , taking fails clause 2, because for the identity of is a nonzero element of , while lies in both and .
