Definition
Let be a field with a discrete valuation . Let be its valuation ring, with maximal ideal and residue field . For , the element has valuation , so it is a unit of . The tame symbol of and is its residue
Remarks
The tame symbol is a Steinberg symbol: it is multiplicative in each variable, and for . So it induces a homomorphism . If and are both units of , then . Some authors use the inverse of this element; the two conventions differ by a sign in additive notation.
Example: , the -adic valuation, and . For an integer prime to , and , so .
Non-example: the map , without the sign, is multiplicative in each variable but is not a Steinberg symbol in general. For , an odd prime and , one has and . The map without the sign gives , which is not ; the sign corrects it to .
