Definition
Let be a smooth manifold of dimension , and let be the algebra of smooth functions . For , a tangent vector at is a linear map such that for all ; that is, a derivation at . The tangent vectors at form a real vector space , the tangent space at . The tangent bundle of is the disjoint union with the projection , . Let be a chart of . has a unique smooth structure in which each such chart gives a chart on , namely
Remarks
Each has dimension , with basis for any chart around , so is a smooth manifold of dimension . For a single chart covers everything, and . For the circle , the vector field is nowhere zero, and is diffeomorphic to .
The tangent bundle of is not isomorphic, as a vector bundle, to the product . By the hairy ball theorem every tangent vector field on vanishes somewhere, while has nowhere zero sections.
Other common definitions of use equivalence classes of curves through , or vectors in coordinates that change by the Jacobian matrix; they give isomorphic spaces.
