Statement

Let LL be a signature and let ℳ\mathcal{M} be a substructure of an LL-structure 𝒩\mathcal{N}, with domains M⊆NM \subseteq N. Then ℳ\mathcal{M} is an elementary substructure of 𝒩\mathcal{N} if and only if the following holds. For every LL-formula φ(x1,…,xn,y)\varphi(x_1, \dots, x_n, y) and all a1,…,an∈Ma_1, \dots, a_n \in M, if 𝒩⊨∃y φ(a1,…,an,y)\mathcal{N} \models \exists y \, \varphi(a_1, \dots, a_n, y), then there is b∈Mb \in M with 𝒩⊨φ(a1,…,an,b)\mathcal{N} \models \varphi(a_1, \dots, a_n, b).

Remarks

The condition mentions truth only in 𝒩\mathcal{N}, which makes it easier to check than the definition. The forward direction is direct: if 𝒩⊨∃y φ(aˉ,y)\mathcal{N} \models \exists y \, \varphi(\bar a, y), then ℳ⊨∃y φ(aˉ,y)\mathcal{M} \models \exists y \, \varphi(\bar a, y), so some b∈Mb \in M has ℳ⊨φ(aˉ,b)\mathcal{M} \models \varphi(\bar a, b), hence 𝒩⊨φ(aˉ,b)\mathcal{N} \models \varphi(\bar a, b). For the converse, one proves by induction on φ\varphi that ℳ⊨φ(aˉ)\mathcal{M} \models \varphi(\bar a) if and only if 𝒩⊨φ(aˉ)\mathcal{N} \models \varphi(\bar a). Atomic formulas agree because ℳ\mathcal{M} is a substructure, the connectives are immediate, and the condition handles the existential quantifier.

Example of use: in the proof of the downward Löwenheim–Skolem theorem, one closes a subset of NN under witnesses for all existential formulas. The test then shows that the result is an elementary substructure.

Going deeper

For a student

The Tarski–Vaught test is the standard tool to build elementary substructures. It underlies the downward Löwenheim–Skolem theorem and the construction of Skolem hulls. Combined with automorphisms of 𝒩\mathcal{N} that fix finitely many elements of MM, it also proves results such as (ℚ,<)⪯(ℝ,<)(\Q, <) \preceq (\R, <): if 𝒩⊨∃y φ(aˉ,y)\mathcal{N} \models \exists y \, \varphi(\bar a, y), an automorphism fixing aˉ\bar a moves a witness into ℚ\Q.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
