Statement

Let 𝒩=(ℕ,0,S,+,⋅)\mathcal{N} = (\N, 0, S, +, \cdot) be the standard model of arithmetic on the natural numbers, and fix a Gödel numbering of the formulas of the language of arithmetic. There is no formula True(x)\mathrm{True}(x) with one free variable such that, for every sentence φ\varphi, 𝒩⊨True(⌜φ⌝)  ⟺  𝒩⊨φ.\mathcal{N} \models \mathrm{True}(\ulcorner \varphi \urcorner) \iff \mathcal{N} \models \varphi. In other words, the set of codes of sentences true in 𝒩\mathcal{N} is not definable in 𝒩\mathcal{N}.

Remarks

Proof idea: suppose True(x)\mathrm{True}(x) exists. The diagonal lemma, applied in the theory of all sentences true in 𝒩\mathcal{N}, gives a sentence λ\lambda with 𝒩⊨λ↔¬True(⌜λ⌝)\mathcal{N} \models \lambda \leftrightarrow \neg \mathrm{True}(\ulcorner \lambda \urcorner). Then λ\lambda is true exactly when it is not true, a contradiction. This is a precise form of the liar paradox.

By contrast, for each nn the set of true Σn\Sigma_n sentences is definable in 𝒩\mathcal{N}; only full truth is not. A syntactic form also holds: if TT is a consistent theory that contains Robinson arithmetic, there is no formula True(x)\mathrm{True}(x) with T⊢True(⌜φ⌝)↔φT \vdash \mathrm{True}(\ulcorner \varphi \urcorner) \leftrightarrow \varphi for every sentence φ\varphi.

Going deeper

For a student

Compare with Gödel's incompleteness theorems: provability in a computably axiomatized theory is definable in arithmetic, but truth is not. So truth and provability differ, which gives another proof of the first incompleteness theorem. In terms of the arithmetical hierarchy, the set of true sentences is not Σn0\Sigma^0_n for any nn.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
