Definition

Let GG be a locally compact group and let λG\lambda_G be its left regular representation on L2(G)L^2(G). Let π\pi be a unitary representation of GG on ℋ\mathcal{H}. Then π\pi is weakly contained in λG\lambda_G if the following holds for every v∈ℋv \in \mathcal{H}. The function g↦⟨π(g)v,v⟩g \mapsto \ip{\pi(g) v}{v} is a limit, uniformly on compact subsets of GG, of finite sums of functions g↦⟨λG(g)w,w⟩g \mapsto \ip{\lambda_G(g) w}{w} with w∈L2(G)w \in L^2(G). An irreducible unitary representation of GG is tempered if it is weakly contained in λG\lambda_G.

Remarks

The functions ⟨π(g)v,v⟩\ip{\pi(g) v}{v} are diagonal matrix coefficients of π\pi. For a second countable unimodular group of type I, the tempered representations form the support of the Plancherel measure.

For a connected semisimple Lie group GG with finite centre and maximal compact subgroup KK, a theorem of Cowling, Haagerup and Howe gives an equivalent form. An irreducible unitary representation π\pi is tempered if and only if its KK-finite matrix coefficients lie in L2+ε(G)L^{2 + \varepsilon}(G) for every ε>0\varepsilon > 0. For reductive groups this growth condition is often taken as the definition.

Example: for G=ℝnG = \R^n, or any abelian locally compact group, every unitary character is tempered, since λG\lambda_G weakly contains every character. Example: a discrete series representation of a semisimple group is tempered, since it is a subrepresentation of λG\lambda_G.

Non-example: for G=SL(2,ℝ)G = \mathrm{SL}(2, \R) the trivial representation is not tempered. Its matrix coefficient is the constant function 11, which is not in L2+ε(G)L^{2+\varepsilon}(G) because GG has infinite Haar measure.
