Linear and multilinear algebra; matrix theory Definition
Tensor algebra
Definition
Let be a field and let be a vector space over . For , let be the tensor product of copies of , and let . The tensor algebra of is the vector space with the bilinear multiplication determined by for , and with unit .
Remarks
is an associative unital algebra over , graded by the degree , and sits inside it. Universal property: for every associative unital -algebra and every linear map , there is exactly one unital algebra homomorphism with for . Example: if has dimension , then , and is an isomorphism ; the check is that both products add degrees. Non-example: for with basis , the polynomial ring is not , because in while in . If has a basis , then is the free associative algebra on the set . The same construction works for a module over a commutative ring.
