Tensor-hom adjunction

Builds on Commutative ringModule over a ringLinear mapTensor product of modulesExact sequence

Statement

Let RR be a commutative ring and let MM, NN, PP be RR-modules. Let Hom⁡R(N,P)\Hom_R(N, P) be the RR-module of RR-linear maps N→PN \to P, with (rψ)(n)=rψ(n)(r\psi)(n) = r\psi(n). Then the map Φ ⁣:Hom⁡R(M⊗RN,P)→Hom⁡R(M,Hom⁡R(N,P)),Φ(φ)(m)(n)=φ(m⊗n),\Phi \colon \Hom_R(M \otimes_R N, P) \to \Hom_R(M, \Hom_R(N, P)), \qquad \Phi(\varphi)(m)(n) = \varphi(m \otimes n), is an isomorphism of RR-modules, natural in MM, NN and PP. Thus the functor −⊗RN- \otimes_R N is left adjoint to the hom functor Hom⁡R(N,−)\Hom_R(N, -).

Remarks

The inverse sends ψ ⁣:M→Hom⁡R(N,P)\psi \colon M \to \Hom_R(N, P) to the linear map M⊗RN→PM \otimes_R N \to P induced by the bilinear map (m,n)↦ψ(m)(n)(m, n) \mapsto \psi(m)(n). This is exactly the universal property of the tensor product: linear maps out of M⊗RNM \otimes_R N are bilinear maps on M×NM \times N. In turn, a bilinear map is a linear map from MM to linear maps on NN.

The adjunction has consequences for exact sequences. The functor Hom⁡R(N,−)\Hom_R(N, -) is left exact: if 0→A→B→C0 \to A \to B \to C is exact, then so is 0→Hom⁡R(N,A)→Hom⁡R(N,B)→Hom⁡R(N,C)0 \to \Hom_R(N, A) \to \Hom_R(N, B) \to \Hom_R(N, C). As a left adjoint, −⊗RN- \otimes_R N is right exact: if A→B→C→0A \to B \to C \to 0 is exact, then so is A⊗RN→B⊗RN→C⊗RN→0A \otimes_R N \to B \otimes_R N \to C \otimes_R N \to 0. Neither functor is exact in general. For N=ℤ/2ℤN = \Z/2\Z over ℤ\Z, the surjection ℤ→ℤ/2ℤ\Z \to \Z/2\Z gives Hom⁡(ℤ/2ℤ,ℤ)=0→Hom⁡(ℤ/2ℤ,ℤ/2ℤ)≅ℤ/2ℤ\Hom(\Z/2\Z, \Z) = 0 \to \Hom(\Z/2\Z, \Z/2\Z) \cong \Z/2\Z, which is not surjective; and the injection ℤ→2ℤ\Z \xrightarrow{2} \Z becomes the zero map after −⊗ℤℤ/2ℤ- \otimes_\Z \Z/2\Z.

For a student

This is the prototype of an adjunction, and it explains at once why tensor products are right exact and Hom⁡\Hom is left exact. The failure of exactness is measured by the derived functors Tor⁡\operatorname{Tor} and Ext⁡\operatorname{Ext}. Flat modules are those NN for which −⊗RN- \otimes_R N is exact, and projective modules those for which Hom⁡R(N,−)\Hom_R(N, -) is exact. The same adjunction holds for bimodules over noncommutative rings, and for sheaves of modules.
