Definition
Let be a commutative ring and let , be -algebras. The tensor product is the tensor product of -modules with the multiplication determined by extended bilinearly to finite sums. With this multiplication and identity , it is an -algebra, with structure map .
Remarks
The multiplication is well defined because the formula is -bilinear in each pair of arguments. The maps and are -algebra homomorphisms, and their images commute. If and are commutative, then is commutative, and it has a universal property. For every commutative -algebra and -algebra maps , , there is exactly one -algebra map with .
Example: , with ; both sides are free -modules with these bases, and the map respects products. Another example is , by the Chinese remainder theorem, since over .
Non-example: the direct product with componentwise operations is in general not . For over , the product has zero divisors, such as , while is an integral domain.
