Definition
Let be a signature with only function symbols and let be a set of variables. Let be the set of terms over and . Assume that is nonempty, that is, is nonempty or has a constant symbol. The term algebra is the algebra of signature with universe . Its operations are for each function symbol of arity and all terms .
Remarks
The term algebra is absolutely free over . For every algebra of signature and every map , there is a unique homomorphism extending , namely , the value of . When is empty, it is the algebra of closed terms, also called the Herbrand universe.
Example: let have one binary symbol and let . The elements , , , , … are pairwise distinct, and the operation sends to the term . This is the free magma on one generator.
Non-example: the positive integers with read as addition are not isomorphic to this term algebra, even though they are generated by . In the term algebra, implies and , because terms have a unique reading. In the positive integers while , so this property fails.
