Term

Builds on Signature

Definition

Let σ\sigma be a signature and let VV be a set of variables, disjoint from the symbols of σ\sigma. The set of terms over σ\sigma and VV is the smallest set of finite strings of symbols such that:

  1. every variable x∈Vx \in V is a term;
  2. every constant symbol cc of σ\sigma is a term;
  3. if ff is a function symbol of σ\sigma of arity n≥1n \ge 1 and t1,…,tnt_1, \dots, t_n are terms, then f(t1,…,tn)f(t_1, \dots, t_n) is a term.

A term with no variables is a closed term, or a ground term.

Remarks

In the signature of rings, ⋅(x,+(y,1))\cdot(x, +(y, 1)) is a term, usually written x⋅(y+1)x \cdot (y + 1). It is a term by clause 1 for xx and yy, clause 2 for 11, and clause 3 twice. In the signature of ordered sets, x<yx < y is not a term: << is a relation symbol, not a function symbol, so clause 3 does not apply. Every term has a unique reading, so one can define functions on terms by recursion on this construction. In Mathlib terms are FirstOrder.Language.Term.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
