Ternary discriminator

Builds on Ternary operationPixley term

Definition

Let AA be a nonempty set. The ternary discriminator on AA is the following ternary operation t ⁣:A3→At \colon A^3 \to A. t(x,y,z)={zif x=y,xif x≠y.t(x, y, z) = \begin{cases} z & \text{if } x = y, \\ x & \text{if } x \neq y. \end{cases} A term s(x,y,z)s(x, y, z) is a discriminator term for an algebra AA if its term operation on AA is the ternary discriminator on AA.

Remarks

Example: on a field FF with qq elements, the polynomial s(x,y,z)=x+(z−x)(1−(x−y)q−1)s(x, y, z) = x + (z - x)\bigl(1 - (x - y)^{q - 1}\bigr) gives the discriminator. Check: if x=yx = y then (x−y)q−1=0(x - y)^{q - 1} = 0 and s=zs = z; if x≠yx \neq y then (x−y)q−1=1(x - y)^{q - 1} = 1 and s=xs = x. Non-example: on {0,1}\set{0, 1} the lattice term (x∧y)∨(y∧z)∨(x∧z)(x \wedge y) \vee (y \wedge z) \vee (x \wedge z) is not the discriminator, since at (0,1,1)(0, 1, 1) it gives 11 while the discriminator gives 00. The discriminator satisfies t(x,y,y)=xt(x, y, y) = x, t(x,x,y)=yt(x, x, y) = y and t(x,y,x)=xt(x, y, x) = x, so it is a Pixley term operation.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
