statement theorem

The derangement numbers count derangements

Statement

Let XX be a finite set with ∣X∣=n|X| = n. Then the number of derangements of XX is the derangement number DnD_n of the node number of derangements.

Remarks

The proof checks the recursion Dn+2=(n+1)(Dn+Dn+1)D_{n+2} = (n + 1)(D_n + D_{n+1}), as in the node recurrence for derangements. For n=4n = 4 there are 99 derangements among the 2424 permutations.

Explanations

L1 human

The derangement numbers are defined by a recursion, and this result says that they really count the permutations with no fixed point. For example, D3=2D_3 = 2, and {1,2,3}\{1, 2, 3\} has exactly the two derangements 231231 and 312312.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 4 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
