statement theorem

The Möbius function is the inverse of the constant function 1

Statement

Let 1\mathbf{1} be the arithmetic function with 1(n)=1\mathbf{1}(n) = 1 for all nn, and let ε\varepsilon be the function with ε(1)=1\varepsilon(1) = 1 and ε(n)=0\varepsilon(n) = 0 for n>1n > 1. Then μ∗1=ε\mu * \mathbf{1} = \varepsilon, where μ\mu is the Möbius function and ∗* is the Dirichlet convolution. That is, for each positive integer nn, ∑d∣nμ(d)={1if n=1,0if n>1.\sum_{d \mid n} \mu(d) = \begin{cases} 1 & \text{if } n = 1, \\ 0 & \text{if } n > 1. \end{cases}

Remarks

The proof for n>1n > 1: let k=ω(n)≥1k = \omega(n) \ge 1. Only squarefree divisors count, so the sum is ∑j=0k(kj)(−1)j=(1−1)k=0\sum_{j=0}^{k} \binom{k}{j} (-1)^j = (1 - 1)^k = 0. For example, the divisors of 1212 give μ(1)+μ(2)+μ(3)+μ(6)=1−1−1+1=0\mu(1) + \mu(2) + \mu(3) + \mu(6) = 1 - 1 - 1 + 1 = 0. This identity is the key step in the Möbius inversion formula.

Explanations

L1 human

The signs μ(d)\mu(d) over the divisors of nn cancel out, except for n=1n = 1. This is the same cancellation as in the principle of inclusion and exclusion.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 9 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

  3. Divisors of a natural number definition
  4. Prime number definition
  5. Dirichlet convolution definition
  6. Number of distinct prime factors definition

What depends on this

1 node uses this node, directly or through other nodes.
