Definition
Let be a real vector bundle of rank with a continuous inner product on its fibers. Let be the disc bundle and the unit sphere bundle. The Thom space of is the quotient space in which is collapsed to one point, the base point.
Remarks
Up to homeomorphism, does not depend on the inner product. If is compact Hausdorff, is homeomorphic to the one-point compactification of . The notations , and are also used.
Example: if is a point, then , and , so . More generally, for the trivial bundle over a compact space , the Thom space is , the -fold reduced suspension of with a disjoint base point added. The Thom space of the tautological line bundle over is .
Non-example: the disc bundle without the collapse is not the Thom space; it deformation retracts onto the zero section, so it is homotopy equivalent to . For a point and this gives a disc, which is contractible, while is not.
