Thue equation
Definition
Let be an integer and let be a homogeneous polynomial of degree with integer coefficients . Assume that is irreducible over . Let be a nonzero integer. The Thue equation for and is the Diophantine equation in the unknowns .
Remarks
Thue's theorem says that a Thue equation has only finitely many solutions .
Example: is a Thue equation, since is homogeneous of degree and irreducible over , because is not the cube of a rational number. It has the solutions and : indeed .
Non-example: is not a Thue equation, because the degree is . It is a Pell equation, and it has infinitely many solutions, for example and .
