Definition
Let be a compact orientable 3-manifold. For a compact surface with connected components , set where is the Euler characteristic. For a class in homology, the Thurston norm of is The function satisfies for integers and , and it extends uniquely to a continuous seminorm on , also called the Thurston norm.
Remarks
Example: let be a closed orientable surface of genus and . The fiber represents a class with , and Thurston showed that fibers of a fibration over the circle minimise in their class, so .
Non-example of definiteness: in the class of is nonzero, but , so . So is in general only a seminorm, not a norm. It is a norm when no nonzero class is represented by spheres, disks, tori and annuli, for example when is hyperbolic.
