Tide-generating potential
Summary
The tide-generating potential is the potential whose gradient is the tidal acceleration produced by an external body such as the Moon or the Sun. It is the gravitational potential of the body with its constant and linear parts removed. Its expansion in Legendre polynomials begins at degree two, and the degree two term carries almost all of the effect on the Earth. Expanding it in time gives the tidal harmonic constituents.
