Tight and overtwisted contact structures
Definition
Let be a -manifold and let be a contact structure on , so that is a contact manifold. An overtwisted disc in is an embedded closed disc such that:
- the boundary is a Legendrian curve, that is, tangent to ;
- for every , the plane equals the tangent plane .
The contact structure is overtwisted if contains an overtwisted disc, and tight otherwise.
Remarks
Example: on with cylindrical coordinates , the form is a contact form. The disc is overtwisted: on its boundary one has , so is the horizontal plane, which is , and the boundary circle is tangent to it. So this contact structure is overtwisted.
Non-example: the standard contact structure on is tight, by Bennequin's theorem, so no disc satisfies both clauses.
Clause 2 says that the framing of given by the contact planes agrees with the framing given by . In other words, the Legendrian unknot has Thurston–Bennequin number . Eliashberg proved that two overtwisted contact structures on a closed -manifold are isotopic if and only if they are homotopic as plane fields. He also proved that every homotopy class of plane fields contains an overtwisted contact structure. Tight contact structures are much rarer; for example, has a unique tight contact structure up to isotopy, also by Eliashberg.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
