Definition
Let be a deterministic multitape Turing machine with input alphabet that halts on every input. The running time, or time complexity, of is the function given by where is the length of the string . For a function , is the class of languages decided by some such machine with , in big O notation.
Remarks
Example: the language is in . A two-tape machine checks that the input has the form and copies the s to its second tape. Then it crosses off one of them for each , so it uses steps. On a single-tape Turing machine this language can be decided in time but not in time . In fact every language decided by a single-tape machine in time is regular. Non-example: a machine that does not halt on some input has no time complexity in this sense. The same definitions apply to other models, such as random-access machines, where each instruction counts as one step.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
