Definition
Let be a smooth quasi-projective variety over a field, with rational Chow ring . Let be a vector bundle of rank on with Chern classes . Write formally , where are the Chern roots of . The Todd class of is where each factor is expanded as the power series . The product is symmetric in the , so it is a polynomial in in each degree, and only finitely many degrees are nonzero. The Todd class of is , for the tangent bundle .
Remarks
In low degrees, The Todd class is multiplicative: for an exact sequence . Example: for a smooth projective curve of genus , , and , so the degree of the part in is . Non-example: the power series also gives a multiplicative class, but it is the total Chern class, not the Todd class. The Todd series, with its coefficient of , is the one that makes the Hirzebruch–Riemann–Roch formula hold.
