Definition

Let XX be a compact Hausdorff space. The isomorphism classes of complex vector bundles of finite rank on XX form a commutative monoid under the direct sum (Whitney sum) ⊕\oplus. The group K0(X)K^0(X), also written K(X)K(X), is the Grothendieck group of this monoid. If XX has a base point x0x_0, the reduced group K~0(X)\tilde{K}^0(X) is the kernel of the map K0(X)→K0({x0})≅ℤK^0(X) \to K^0(\set{x_0}) \cong \Z given by restriction to x0x_0. For n≥1n \ge 1, K−n(X)=K~0(Sn∧X+)K^{-n}(X) = \tilde{K}^0(S^n \wedge X_+), where X+X_+ is XX with a disjoint base point added, SnS^n is the nn-sphere and ∧\wedge is the smash product. Topological K-theory is the sequence of groups K−n(X)K^{-n}(X), n≥0n \ge 0.

Remarks

Using real vector bundles instead of complex ones gives real K-theory KO(X)KO(X). The tensor product of bundles makes K0(X)K^0(X) a commutative ring. By the Bott periodicity theorem, K−n−2(X)≅K−n(X)K^{-n-2}(X) \cong K^{-n}(X), and this defines Kn(X)K^n(X) for all integers nn.

Example: for a point, a vector bundle is a finite-dimensional complex vector space, so K0(pt)≅ℤK^0(\text{pt}) \cong \Z through the dimension. For the 22-sphere S2S^2, K0(S2)≅ℤ⊕ℤK^0(S^2) \cong \Z \oplus \Z. It is generated by the trivial line bundle 11 and the class HH of the tautological line bundle on ℂℙ1≅S2\mathbb{CP}^1 \cong S^2, with the relation (H−1)2=0(H - 1)^2 = 0 in the ring K0(S2)K^0(S^2).

Non-example: the monoid of isomorphism classes is not itself K0(X)K^0(X). In it, the trivial line bundle has no inverse, because the rank of a direct sum is the sum of the ranks. Also, two bundles EE and FF with E⊕1≅F⊕1E \oplus 1 \cong F \oplus 1 have the same class in K0(X)K^0(X) even when E≇FE \not\cong F. For real bundles and KOKO, the tangent bundle of S2S^2 and the trivial bundle of rank 22 are such a pair.
