Topology generated by a family of seminorms

Builds on SeminormVector spaceTopological space

Definition

Let 𝕂\mathbb{K} be ℝ\R or β„‚\C, let VV be a vector space over 𝕂\mathbb{K}, and let 𝒫\mathcal{P} be a family of seminorms on VV. For x∈Vx \in V, finitely many p1,…,pnβˆˆπ’«p_1, \ldots, p_n \in \mathcal{P} and Ξ΅>0\varepsilon > 0, put B(x;p1,…,pn;Ξ΅)={y∈V:pi(yβˆ’x)<Ρ forΒ i=1,…,n}.B(x; p_1, \ldots, p_n; \varepsilon) = \set{y \in V : p_i(y - x) < \varepsilon \text{ for } i = 1, \ldots, n}. The topology generated by 𝒫\mathcal{P} is the topology on VV defined as follows. A set UβŠ†VU \subseteq V is open if for every x∈Ux \in U there are p1,…,pnβˆˆπ’«p_1, \ldots, p_n \in \mathcal{P} and Ξ΅>0\varepsilon > 0 with B(x;p1,…,pn;Ξ΅)βŠ†UB(x; p_1, \ldots, p_n; \varepsilon) \subseteq U.

Remarks

With this topology VV is a topological vector space, each pβˆˆπ’«p \in \mathcal{P} is continuous, and it is the coarsest topology on VV with these two properties. A net (xi)(x_i) converges to xx if and only if p(xiβˆ’x)β†’0p(x_i - x) \to 0 for every pβˆˆπ’«p \in \mathcal{P}. The topology is Hausdorff if and only if 𝒫\mathcal{P} separates points: for each xβ‰ 0x \ne 0 some pβˆˆπ’«p \in \mathcal{P} has p(x)β‰ 0p(x) \ne 0. Example: on ℝX\R^X, the space of all real functions on a set XX, the seminorms px(f)=∣f(x)∣p_x(f) = \abs{f(x)} for x∈Xx \in X generate the topology of pointwise convergence, which is the product topology. The check: a basic set B(f;px1,…,pxn;Ξ΅)B(f; p_{x_1}, \ldots, p_{x_n}; \varepsilon) restricts the values at x1,…,xnx_1, \ldots, x_n only, as a basic open set of the product topology does. Non-example: for 0<p<10 < p < 1, the usual metric topology of Lp([0,1])L^p([0, 1]) is not generated by any family of seminorms. Indeed, its only continuous linear form is 00. A nonzero continuous seminorm would give a nonzero continuous linear form by the Hahn–Banach theorem. The topologies generated by families of seminorms are exactly the topologies of locally convex spaces.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
