Definition

Let RR be a commutative ring and let MM and NN be RR-modules. Choose a projective resolution ⋯→P1→d1P0→M→0\cdots \to P_1 \xrightarrow{d_1} P_0 \to M \to 0 of MM. Tensoring the complex P∙P_\bullet with NN gives a chain complex ⋯→P2⊗RN→d2⊗id⁡NP1⊗RN→d1⊗id⁡NP0⊗RN→0.\cdots \to P_2 \otimes_R N \xrightarrow{d_2 \otimes \id_N} P_1 \otimes_R N \xrightarrow{d_1 \otimes \id_N} P_0 \otimes_R N \to 0. For n≥0n \ge 0, the nn-th Tor module is its homology Tor⁡nR(M,N)=ker⁡(dn⊗id⁡N)/im⁡(dn+1⊗id⁡N),\operatorname{Tor}_n^R(M, N) = \ker(d_n \otimes \id_N) / \im(d_{n+1} \otimes \id_N), with d0⊗id⁡N=0d_0 \otimes \id_N = 0.

Remarks

Up to a canonical isomorphism, Tor⁡nR(M,N)\operatorname{Tor}_n^R(M, N) does not depend on the resolution, and resolving NN instead of MM gives the same modules. One has Tor⁡0R(M,N)≅M⊗RN\operatorname{Tor}_0^R(M, N) \cong M \otimes_R N and Tor⁡nR(M,N)≅Tor⁡nR(N,M)\operatorname{Tor}_n^R(M, N) \cong \operatorname{Tor}_n^R(N, M). Example: for integers m,n≥1m, n \ge 1, tensoring 0→ℤ→⋅mℤ→ℤ/mℤ→00 \to \Z \xrightarrow{\cdot m} \Z \to \Z/m\Z \to 0 with ℤ/nℤ\Z/n\Z gives ℤ/nℤ→⋅mℤ/nℤ\Z/n\Z \xrightarrow{\cdot m} \Z/n\Z, whose kernel is cyclic of order gcd⁡(m,n)\gcd(m, n); so Tor⁡1ℤ(ℤ/mℤ,ℤ/nℤ)≅ℤ/gcd⁡(m,n)ℤ\operatorname{Tor}_1^\Z(\Z/m\Z, \Z/n\Z) \cong \Z/\gcd(m,n)\Z. Non-example: the exact sequence 0→ℤ/mℤ→id⁡ℤ/mℤ→00 \to \Z/m\Z \xrightarrow{\id} \Z/m\Z \to 0 is not a projective resolution over ℤ\Z for m≥2m \ge 2, and using it would wrongly give Tor⁡1=0\operatorname{Tor}_1 = 0. A module MM is flat if and only if Tor⁡1R(M,N)=0\operatorname{Tor}_1^R(M, N) = 0 for all RR-modules NN. For a noncommutative ring RR, the same construction works for a right module MM and a left module NN.
