Toric ideal

Definition
Let be a field, let , and let . For , write in the Laurent polynomial ring . Let be the -algebra homomorphism with . The toric ideal of is the kernel .
Remarks
The ideal is prime, since is isomorphic to a subring of a domain. Let also denote the integer matrix with columns . Then is generated, as a -vector space and hence as an ideal, by the binomials with and .
Example: , and , , , so , , . Since , the binomial lies in , and in fact .
Non-example: if the characteristic of is not , the binomial ideal of is not a toric ideal. It is not prime, because while neither factor is.
