Trace distance
Summary
The trace distance is a metric on the set of quantum states, defined as half the trace norm of their difference. It generalises the total variation distance between probability distributions. Its operational meaning is the largest difference of the probabilities that the two states give to one measurement outcome. For this reason it controls how well two states can be told apart.
