Trace distance

Definition
Let be a finite-dimensional complex Hilbert space, and let and be density operators on . The trace distance between and is where is the positive square root and is the trace.
Remarks
Since is self-adjoint with eigenvalues , the definition reads .
Example: for and , the difference has eigenvalues and , so . For qubit states with Bloch vectors and , has eigenvalues , so .
Non-example: half the trace without the absolute value, , is always , because both states have trace ; it is not a distance.
Equivalent form: , and the maximum is reached at the projection onto the positive part of . It is a metric with values in , and it does not increase under quantum channels. It is related to the fidelity by .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
