Operator theory Particular families of operators Concept

Square root of a positive operator

Summary

Every positive operator AA on a Hilbert space has exactly one positive operator BB with B2=AB^2 = A, written A1/2A^{1/2} or A\sqrt{A}. It extends the square root of a positive semidefinite matrix to infinite dimensions. The square root defines the absolute value ∣T∣=(T∗T)1/2\abs{T} = (T^*T)^{1/2} of an operator, which enters the polar decomposition and the definition of singular values.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
