Square root of a positive operator

Builds on Hilbert spacePositive operator

Definition

Let HH be a Hilbert space and let A ⁣:H→HA \colon H \to H be a positive operator. A positive square root of AA is a positive operator B ⁣:H→HB \colon H \to H with B2=AB^2 = A. Every positive AA has exactly one positive square root; it is called the square root of AA and written A1/2A^{1/2} or A\sqrt{A}.

Remarks

Example: on L2[0,1]L^2[0, 1] let AA be multiplication by xx, so (Af)(x)=xf(x)(Af)(x) = x f(x). Multiplication by x\sqrt{x} is a positive operator BB, since ⟨Bf,f⟩=∫01x∣f(x)∣2 dx≥0\ip{Bf}{f} = \int_0^1 \sqrt{x} \abs{f(x)}^2 \, dx \ge 0, and B2f=xfB^2 f = x f; so A1/2=BA^{1/2} = B.

Non-example: −I-I satisfies (−I)2=I(-I)^2 = I, but ⟨−x,x⟩=−∥x∥2<0\ip{-x}{x} = -\norm{x}^2 < 0 for x≠0x \ne 0, so −I-I is a square root of II but not the positive square root.

The square root is given by the continuous functional calculus, A1/2=f(A)A^{1/2} = f(A) with f(t)=tf(t) = \sqrt{t} on the spectrum of AA. It is also the norm limit of polynomials in AA, so it commutes with every bounded operator that commutes with AA.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
