Definition

Let HH be a complex Hilbert space, and let TT be a bounded operator on HH with adjoint T∗T^*. Let ∣T∣=(T∗T)1/2\abs{T} = (T^* T)^{1/2} be the square root of the positive operator T∗TT^* T. The operator TT is trace class if for some orthonormal basis (ei)i∈I(e_i)_{i \in I} of HH, ∥T∥1=∑i∈I⟨∣T∣ei,ei⟩<∞.\norm{T}_1 = \sum_{i \in I} \ip{\abs{T} e_i}{e_i} < \infty. The number ∥T∥1\norm{T}_1 does not depend on the orthonormal basis; it is the trace norm of TT.

Remarks

If TT is trace class, then for every orthonormal basis (ei)(e_i) the sum tr⁡T=∑i⟨Tei,ei⟩\operatorname{tr} T = \sum_i \ip{T e_i}{e_i} converges absolutely, and its value does not depend on the basis. On ℂn\C^n, this is the usual trace of a matrix. Equivalently, TT is trace class if and only if TT is compact and its singular values satisfy ∑nsn(T)<∞\sum_n s_n(T) < \infty, so the trace class is the Schatten class S1S_1. Example: on ℓ2\ell^2, let Ten=en/n2T e_n = e_n / n^2; then ∣T∣=T\abs{T} = T and ∥T∥1=∑1/n2<∞\norm{T}_1 = \sum 1/n^2 < \infty, so TT is trace class with tr⁡T=π2/6\operatorname{tr} T = \pi^2 / 6. Non-example: Den=en/nD e_n = e_n / n gives ∑n⟨∣D∣en,en⟩=∑1/n=∞\sum_n \ip{\abs{D} e_n}{e_n} = \sum 1/n = \infty, so DD is compact but not trace class. The trace class operators form a two-sided ideal of the bounded operators, and tr⁡(AT)=tr⁡(TA)\operatorname{tr}(AT) = \operatorname{tr}(TA) for TT trace class and AA bounded.
