Definition
Let be the Airy function. Let be the Hastings–McLeod solution of the Painlevé II equation that is, the unique solution with as . The Tracy–Widom distribution (for ) is the probability distribution on with distribution function The laws for and are given by
Remarks
Example: let be an matrix of the Gaussian unitary ensemble, Hermitian with independent standard real normal diagonal entries and independent complex normal entries above the diagonal with . If is its largest eigenvalue, then converges in distribution to . Equivalently, on , the Fredholm determinant of the Airy kernel . Non-example: the standard normal law is not a Tracy–Widom law; has mean about and is not symmetric about its mean. Baik, Deift and Johansson showed that the length of the longest increasing subsequence of a uniform random permutation of letters satisfies in distribution.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
