Transversality
Builds on Smooth manifoldSubmanifoldDifferential of a smooth map
Definition
Let and be smooth manifolds, let be an embedded submanifold, and let be a smooth map. The map is transverse to , written , if for every with , where is the differential of at . Two embedded submanifolds are transverse, written , if for every ; this is transversality of the inclusion to .
Remarks
The condition is empty where misses , so a map whose image avoids is transverse to . If is a point , then means that is a regular value of . If , then is an embedded submanifold of with . Example: in the -axis and the line are transverse at the origin, since their directions and span . Non-example: the -axis and the parabola meet at the origin, where both tangent lines equal the -axis, which does not span ; so they are not transverse.
