Travel-time curve
Builds on Seismic ray theoryRay parameter
Definition
Fix an Earth model, a source, and a seismic phase, that is, a type of wave together with its path, such as the direct P-wave. The travel-time curve of that phase is a set of pairs . A pair belongs to it when a seismic ray of that phase reaches the surface at distance from the source after the time . In a flat model is a horizontal distance; in a spherical model it is the angular distance .
Remarks
Where the curve is a smooth function near a ray, its slope is the ray parameter of the ray: . Writing defines the intercept time , and . Example: in a layer of thickness and speed over a half-space of speed , with the source at the surface, the direct wave has . The head wave refracted along the interface has , a line of slope . Its slope is the ray parameter of the ray at the critical angle , as expected. The two lines cross at , beyond which the head wave arrives first. Non-example: a single seismogram, ground motion against time at one station, is not a travel-time curve; it gives only one value of . The curve can be multivalued, with triplications, when the speed increases fast with depth.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
