Travelling salesman problem
Problem
Let , and let be the complete graph on the vertex set . Let assign to each edge a nonnegative weight , the distance between cities and . A tour is a Hamiltonian cycle in , and its length is the sum of the weights of its edges. The travelling salesman problem asks for a tour of minimum length. In the decision version, an input with a number is given, and the question is whether some tour has length at most .
Remarks
The decision version is NP-complete, and the optimization version is NP-hard. Hardness follows from the Hamiltonian cycle problem. Given a graph on vertices, give weight to its edges and weight to the other pairs. Then has a Hamiltonian cycle exactly when some tour has length . Trying all tours solves the problem. The Held–Karp dynamic programming algorithm takes steps. When satisfies the triangle inequality, Christofides' algorithm finds a tour at most times the optimum in polynomial time. Without the triangle inequality, no polynomial-time algorithm achieves any constant approximation factor unless .
