Triangle removal lemma
Builds on Graph
Statement
For every real number there is a real number with the following property. Let be a finite simple graph with vertices that contains at most triangles. Then one can delete at most edges of so that the resulting graph has no triangle.
Remarks
The standard proof applies the Szemerédi regularity lemma with a small accuracy. Delete the edges inside parts, between irregular pairs, and between pairs of low density; these are at most edges. If a triangle survives, its three parts are pairwise regular and dense, and the counting lemma then gives more than triangles. The resulting is very small: the proof gives of tower type in .
A consequence: if every edge of a graph on vertices lies in exactly one triangle, then the graph has edges. Indeed, if it has edges, it has triangles, which is less than for large . The triangles are edge-disjoint, so destroying them needs deletions, and the lemma gives . Applied to a graph built from a subset of , this gives Roth's theorem on three-term arithmetic progressions.

For a student
The lemma is the simplest case of the graph removal lemma. There, any fixed graph takes the place of the triangle, and copies take the place of triangles. It is a central tool linking extremal graph theory and additive combinatorics. Its use for Roth's theorem shows how a statement about graphs can prove a statement about integers. Better bounds for than tower type in this generality are a well-known open question.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
