Manifolds and cell complexes Definition
Triangulation
Definition
Let be a topological space. A triangulation of is a pair with a simplicial complex. The map must be a homeomorphism from the geometric realization of onto . is triangulable if it has a triangulation.
Remarks
Let be the simplicial complex of all proper faces of a -simplex in , with vertices, edges and triangles. Radial projection from the barycentre onto the sphere centred there is a homeomorphism , so with this map is a triangulation of .
The CW structure of with one -cell and one -cell is not a triangulation. Its -cell is glued to the point along its whole boundary circle, while in a simplicial complex each triangle has three distinct vertices and three edges.
Some authors allow only finite or locally finite complexes , and some require to be piecewise linear in a given structure. Every smooth manifold is triangulable, while some topological -manifolds, such as the manifold, are not.
