Tridiagonal matrix
Builds on RingSquare matrix
Definition
Let be a ring and let be an square matrix over . The matrix is tridiagonal when for all with .
Remarks
Example: is tridiagonal, because the only entries with are and , and both are . Non-example: is not tridiagonal, because and . A tridiagonal matrix is often written with diagonal , superdiagonal and subdiagonal . Then the leading principal minors satisfy , with and . Equivalently, is tridiagonal when it is both upper and lower Hessenberg.
