Twenty-seven lines on a cubic surface

Builds on Del Pezzo surfaceProjective spaceBlowing upAlgebraically closed field

Statement

Let kk be an algebraically closed field. Let X⊂ℙ3X \subset \mathbb{P}^3 be a smooth cubic surface over kk. This means that XX is the zero set in projective space of a homogeneous polynomial FF of degree 33. Moreover, the partial derivatives of FF have no common zero on XX. Then XX contains exactly 2727 lines of ℙ3\mathbb{P}^3.

Remarks

One proof identifies XX with the blow-up of ℙ2\mathbb{P}^2 at six points p1,…,p6p_1, \ldots, p_6 in general position, so that XX is a del Pezzo surface of degree 33. The lines on XX are exactly the curves EE with E2=−1E^2 = -1 and −KX⋅E=1-K_X \cdot E = 1. They are the 66 exceptional curves over the pip_i and the strict transforms of the 1515 lines through two of the points. The other 66 are the strict transforms of the conics through five of the points, and 6+15+6=276 + 15 + 6 = 27. Each of the 2727 lines meets exactly 1010 of the others, and the symmetry group of the incidence configuration is the Weyl group of type E6E_6, of order 5184051840. Smoothness is needed: the cone over a smooth plane cubic is a singular cubic surface. It contains infinitely many lines, one through the vertex and each point of the base curve. The result goes back to Cayley and Salmon in 1849.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem is one of the first results of enumerative geometry and a model for counting curves on varieties. The lines are the (−1)(-1)-curves of the del Pezzo surface of degree 33. Similar counts hold for the other degrees, for instance 1616 such curves on a del Pezzo surface of degree 44 and 240240 on one of degree 11. Over the real numbers a smooth cubic surface has 33, 77, 1515 or 2727 real lines.
