Underactuated system
Builds on Control systemGeneralized coordinates
Definition
Let . Let be generalized coordinates and the inputs. Consider a second-order control system of the form where takes values in and takes values in the real matrices. The system is fully actuated in the state at time if . It is underactuated in that state at time if . A system is called underactuated if it is underactuated in some state at some time.
Remarks
For a mechanical system with invertible inertia matrix , one has , so . In particular, a system with inputs is underactuated in every state.
Example: for the pendulum on a cart, and the only input is a force on the cart, so and .
Non-example: a planar two-link arm with a motor at each joint has , so in every state, and it is fully actuated.
A system can be fully actuated in some states and underactuated in others, for instance when drops rank at some configurations.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
