Definition

Let XX be a set and let Δ={(x,x):x∈X}\Delta = \set{(x, x) : x \in X} be the diagonal of X×XX \times X. For relations U,V⊆X×XU, V \subseteq X \times X, write U−1={(y,x):(x,y)∈U}U^{-1} = \set{(y, x) : (x, y) \in U} and V∘U={(x,z):there is y with (x,y)∈U and (y,z)∈V}V \circ U = \set{(x, z) : \text{there is } y \text{ with } (x, y) \in U \text{ and } (y, z) \in V}. A uniformity on XX is a nonempty family 𝒰\mathcal{U} of subsets of X×XX \times X such that:

  1. Every U∈𝒰U \in \mathcal{U} contains Δ\Delta.
  2. If U∈𝒰U \in \mathcal{U} and U⊆V⊆X×XU \subseteq V \subseteq X \times X, then V∈𝒰V \in \mathcal{U}.
  3. If U,V∈𝒰U, V \in \mathcal{U}, then U∩V∈𝒰U \cap V \in \mathcal{U}.
  4. If U∈𝒰U \in \mathcal{U}, then there is V∈𝒰V \in \mathcal{U} with V∘V⊆UV \circ V \subseteq U.
  5. If U∈𝒰U \in \mathcal{U}, then U−1∈𝒰U^{-1} \in \mathcal{U}.

A uniform space is a pair (X,𝒰)(X, \mathcal{U}) of a set XX and a uniformity 𝒰\mathcal{U} on XX.

Remarks

Let (X,d)(X, d) be a metric space and let Uε={(x,y):d(x,y)<ε}U_\varepsilon = \set{(x, y) : d(x, y) < \varepsilon}. The sets that contain some UεU_\varepsilon with ε>0\varepsilon > 0 form a uniformity. Clauses 1, 2, 3 and 5 follow from d(x,x)=0d(x, x) = 0, from Uε∩Uδ=Umin⁡(ε,δ)U_\varepsilon \cap U_\delta = U_{\min(\varepsilon, \delta)} and from symmetry of dd. Clause 4 holds with V=Uε/2V = U_{\varepsilon/2}, by the triangle inequality. On ℝ\R, the family of sets that contain {(x,y):∣x−y∣<1}\set{(x, y) : \abs{x - y} < 1} satisfies clauses 1, 2, 3 and 5 but not 4. For VV in this family, V∘VV \circ V contains {(x,y):∣x−y∣<2}\set{(x, y) : \abs{x - y} < 2}, which does not lie in {(x,y):∣x−y∣<1}\set{(x, y) : \abs{x - y} < 1}. The members of 𝒰\mathcal{U} are its entourages. The uniform topology on XX declares O⊆XO \subseteq X open when for each x∈Ox \in O there is U∈𝒰U \in \mathcal{U} with {y:(x,y)∈U}⊆O\set{y : (x, y) \in U} \subseteq O.
