Uniformly convex space
Builds on Normed vector space
Definition
Let be a normed vector space over or . The space is uniformly convex if the following holds. For every with there is such that for all with , and ,
Remarks
Example: an inner product space is uniformly convex. By the parallelogram law, for and , so works. Non-example: with the norm . For and one has but , so no works for . The spaces and for are uniformly convex by Clarkson's inequalities; and are not. Uniform convexity depends on the norm, not only on the topology: is uniformly convex with the Euclidean norm and not with the norm .
